Boogie’s Bucket List

I hope you followed along with us on Facebook as we shared Boogie’s Bucket List. If not, here’s the synopsis:

Boogie arrived to the Rescue Ranch on Sunday August 16th.

Boogie came to us as an owner surrender. Her family had her since she was a little baby. At 6 months, Boogie started displaying neurological symptoms like falling over and running into furniture. This began a long journey for them of vet visits, trying medications, seeing tiny improvements, followed by bigger set backs. Finally they reached the point of the vets not having any other solutions. They were told it was neurological and she should be put down. At this point Boogie was just 17 months old and had been dealing with an debilitating illness for over a year. Boogie could no longer walk and she struggled to even eat and drink. Her family was at a loss, but not ready to give up hope. They reached out for help.

Boogie’s family drove her hundreds of miles to the Ranch hoping that we could get her to a specialist and help her, give her something back, or just find answers. Boogie and I went Monday to Main Street Vet. We started with the basics, exam, blood work, and x-rays hoping for an easy answer, something that had been missed before, anything. But, there were no quick answers. So, Tuesday Boogie and I headed for the University hospital to see the neurologist team.

Boogie’s was a fascinating case, but sadly the news was not good. Although they couldn’t say “ah, here’s the problem” we did know Boogie’s condition was not treatable. There was no magic pill or injection or therapy that could give her back what she’d lost. There was no wheelchair or sling or robot device that would make her body work again.

The vets told us it would be a miracle if she survived through the weekend; and made an appointment with us to bring her back Monday if she was still with us to make sure she wasn’t in pain. Boogie was dying and there is nothing we could do to stop it or slow it down.  But, we could help her live every day, every moment that she had to the fullest. We could show her a little piece of the world. We could take her places, meet new people, and animals. We could do new things.

Thousands of you joined us as we celebrated Boogie’s life through her hashtag ‪#‎BoogiesBucketList‬ and her album here.

Boogie passed away in our arms at 12:22 AM on Sunday August 23rd, just 7 days after arriving to us.

The University is performing an autopsy so that we can know what happened. While we were unable to stop Boogie’s body from shutting down, she may be able help the next dog.

In furthering Boogie’s mission to connect people, live life, and touch hearts, we have created a 8.5 x 8.5 hardbound photo book documenting her journey with us. Photo books will be on sale through August 31st, 2015. They are $35 each.

100% of the proceeds from Boogie’s Bucket List Photo Books will be donated to canine neurological research in the hopes that we can help save the next one.

UPDATE: Books are with the printer and should arrive October 9th to me. We will be repackaging and mailing them out ASAP!
