Meet JW
JW arrived in the final weekend of June. He had been picked up stray, almost at heat stroke by animal control in Macon. We work closely with the Macon animal shelter, so they called us immediately. When his stray hold (period to be found/reclaimed by the owner) was over, they let us know that we could pick him up. Thanks to our friends at the Humane Society of Morgan County, JW caught a ride to the Rescue Ranch.
He was very well behaved at his vet and is settling right in at his current foster home with 2 other Bostons (a 10 year old female and an 11 year old male). He arrived already neutered, so at some point in his life he was cared for. I wish they could tell us what happened!
Somewhere along the way, he was not receiving heart worm preventative and the vet diagnosed him with heart worms. He doesn’t have any clinical signs, so that’s good news. He’s started the first phase of treatment (which is 2 rounds of Heartguard, 30 days apart along with an antibiotic) and then will undergo a series of 3 injections. The first injection will be around August 30th & he’ll stay overnight at the vet. 30 days after that he’ll go back for his next two injections given a day apart and he’ll spend two nights at the vet for observation. Once he starts injections, he’ll be on crate rest (either crated, held or sitting with someone, or on a leash for potty breaks) until 6 weeks after the final injection.
We’ve often found that foster-to-adopt works well with dogs undergoing heartworm treatment, but it does require he come out to the vet in Madison, GA for his injections.
The vet estimates him at about 6 years old. He’s vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped.
If you are interested in opening your home to a very special middle aged man, let us know!
