We are heartbroken to have to announce that Bonnie passed away today in the loving arms of her foster mom Kelly. Today we have been able to share the stories of several of our great foster homes and Bonnie was lucky enough to have spent her last 3 months with one of the best.
Bonnie arrived to us in August of this year after her first dad passed away. She was nine years old and the remaining family had wanted to put her down because of her age. Thank goodness Jessica knew the family through a coworker and stepped up for Bonnie and drove her 2 hours to come and meet us.
Bonnie’s nails were long and she had a couple lumps and bumps and one large mammary tumor, but you could tell she had been loved and loved people and affection.
Sadly the biopsy of her tumors revealed mast cell cancers and malignant mammary adenocarcinoma. We worried that the cancer would come back, but Kelly agreed to foster her anyway.
If love could cure cancer, Bonnie would be well today. Instead, Kelly started noticing red bumps on Bonnie. She went to the vet, we hoped for an ant bite, but the bumps kept spreading and the swelling grew worse. Last Monday we took Bonnie back to the vet. Bonnie’s mast cell cancer had become systemic. We started Bonnie on Kinavet a new drug for treating systemic mast cell, but for Bonnie it wasn’t the answer.
We are so glad that we got to spend time with Bonnie this past Saturday at the Chili Cook Off where Kelly brought her in her adorable pink stroller so she could enjoy the affection of people without getting too tired. We are so incredibly thankful to everyone in Bonnie’s foster family who loved this little girl so much. We are especially thankful to Kelly who committed to loving this sweet senior girl with her whole heart even knowing it would be broken.
Goodbye Bonnie, until we see you again little girl.

Meet Bonnie
When Bonnie’s human dad passed much of the family thought it would be best to just put Bonnie down. She’s 9 after all, they said, well past her prime. Thankfully they instead agreed to let her come to Rescue.
She arrived with several tumors, including a large on her her belly, that were removed. Sadly, several of the tumors were cancerous. Bonnie’s tumors were mass cell & mammary carcinoma. While the mass cell was grade 1 and removed with good margins, the larger mammary carcinoma is a much more malignant and aggressive. Bonnie is constantly monitored for signs of the cancer spreading.
Bonnie is currently in our “Forever Foster” program where she will live out the remainder of her life with her foster family who loves her very much.
Bonnie requires regular vet checks. She likes to be held and petted and told how pretty she is. She also loves soft places to lay and blankets to snuggle on with her furry foster siblings. She also has some food allergies and requires a special food.
