Meet Bugsy
Bugsy arrived on the evening Saturday February 20th. At some point that morning she was struck by a car. She was picked up by animal control who immediately took her to an emergency animal hospital. X-rays revealed a fracture in her spine and an MRI was recommended. At some point during this Bugsy’s owners were found and choose to surrender her to animal control. We understand they were heartbroken to make this decision, but felt it was the only chance they had at getting Bugsy the help they could not afford.
Animal control contacted us to help. With the help of animal control staying open on a Saturday for us to get there, and several legs of volunteers, we got her to the UGA ER. While we hoped surgery would be able to repair Bugsy’s spine, the neurology exam showed a severed spinal cord and fractured vertebrae with no sensation in Bugsy’s rear legs, making surgery not an option for her and leaving her paralyzed.
Bugsy is still and always will be paralyzed, but she is not in any pain. She still and will always have no bowel or bladder control and need to be expressed a couple times a day. However, spinal walking seems like a real possibility for her. For some dogs, the nerves can “learn” to fire in such a way to allow them to stand and walk. The walk is usually uncoordinated and a little clumsy, but still walking. Floyd, the other paralyzed dog we had in the past, had become so good at spinal walking that he can now run!
Bugsy is a fighter. She’s strong and determined and just feisty enough that nothing will slow her down! She rocks in her wheel chair and loves to go for walks. She LOVES squeaky toys and puzzles. She’s smart and funny and very, very special.
Bugsy deserves the very best forever home who doesn’t see her as “less” but instead sees her as “more”… more determined and more full of life with an incredible will to to not just survive, but thrive.
If you think you are her forever family, apply to adopt her now!
Oh oh….I think I see an adoption application in my future. So sweet.
when you say expressed do you mean diapered for feces or urine expressed? being a nurse and owner of one special needs boston and one that is just special I can understand what your stating for expressed. I was just wondering if you are diapering her. I am thinking she would be a good fit here. if she is able to be adopted out of state.
Just urine expression. The bowel movements happen on their own, but not controlled. We often diaper her in the house.
And yes, we do adopt out of state. Feel free to email us at rescueranchga@gmail.com if you have questions for the quickest response.
Hi
Has Bugsy been adopted yet? I just completed an application to adopt a Boston and I started thinking about Bugsy. I am a high school guidance counselor and we have talked about having a service dog in our office. Does Bugsy have the temperament to come to work everyday and be visited by children? Of course she would be an indoor dog in our house, however, she would accompany me to work. Please email if you think this could work.
