Meet Poe

Wow! Talk about an amazing before and after! #PoePug is now mange free and 8lbs heavier!

He truly looks like a different dog! Poe still has a ways to go to be healthy (heart worms, knee problem, etc) but we’re making big progress!

From November 2015:

Poor Poe Pug… He’s a train wreck from his hairless pug nose to his hairless pug tail.

Poe has sarcoptic mange, which is bad news. Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious to people and other pets. Poe is in isolation and has began treatment with moxidectin (Advantage Multi) to kill off the scabies mites that cause sarcoptic mange and an antibiotic to treat the secondary skin infections caused by the scratching. This will also help address his ear infections.  His nails are so long were folding over and getting caught up with each other. We dealt with a bath and a nail trim first thing on arriving to the Ranch.

The mange is our number one priority right now as it will go a long way to making him more comfortable and allow us to love on him. Once we have the mange taken care of, we will start on his long list of medical concerns.

Poe is heart worm positive and will need to undergo heart worm treatment. He will need to be neutered. He weighs 12 lbs and needs to gain 30-40% of his body weight. Poe has chronic dry eye and will be on eye medications for the rest of his life (we’ve started these medications already).

He also has either a severely luxating patella or an old fracture in his back left leg that was never set. We’ll know more when we do x-rays in a few weeks whether we can do anything surgically to make walking easier for him.

Poe is looking at a very long recovery that will take months to get him healthy. The good news is that Poe is only 4 years old; he has a long life ahead of him to enjoy being healthy, happy, and loved. Now to get him there!
